Everyone agrees that the share of women in managerial positions in Germany is too low. And hardly anyone would publicly deny the fact that it would be beneficial to have more female managers. But how can the number of women in managerial positions – beyond the level of middle management – actually be increased?
Complex factors and structural social obstacles are what makes it so difficult to find answers to this question and, above all, to change the reality.
2007, we brought together self-employed business women and women employed in managerial positions for the first time at the 1st “Women at the Top” Forum to launch a new, joint initiative aimed at increasing the presence of women in managerial positions in the Ruhr District and North Rhine-Westphalia.
Funding from the European Community and the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia has been approved for the implementation of our initiative in the Ruhr District in 2007 and 2008 through the North Rhine-Westphalian Ministry for Inter-Generation and Family Affairs, Women and Integration. The first forum was held in Bochum on 20 September 2007 and discussed effective strategies for ensuring more women get into management. 18 women in managerial positions have since been cooperating as a strategy team developing and defining ideas further and preparing for the 2nd „Women at the Top“ Forum on 19 June 2008.
